Food License Registration certificate is required to run a food product business. You have to register under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to manufacture, distribute and transport food products. FSSAI is established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. If a FSSAI license holder is deceased, the license can be shifted to the heir or the legal representative of the dead person. The representative or the family member must apply to the concerned authority to transfer the license in his/her name.

FSSAI registration depends on the turnover and the type of business. Usually, if your annual turnover is below Rs 12 lakhs, then you need to acquire Basic Fssai Registration. Else, you need State or Central license.
The validity of FSSAI registration varies from 1 to 5 years. A person needs to apply for FSSAI renewal accordingly.
All the Food Caterers operating at the government establishments such as railway stations and airports require FSSAI Central License.
Vendors with a turnover less than 30 crore and owning up to 100 wagons, require FSSAI State License. Those with turnover more than 30 crore and owning more than 100 wagons require FSSAI Central License.
If a food service operator fails to abide by an improvement notice, his license may be canceled.
If a food business operator fails to comply with the improvement notice, authority can cancel the license after giving the licensee an opportunity to show cause.
If the required information is not provided within the stipulated time of 30 days, Licensing Officer can reject the application.
“Recall” means action taken by the Food Service Provider to withdraw any food item from market, which is not complying Section 28 of FSS Act, 2006.
A Food Business Operator operating in more than two States has to acquire Central License for its registered Office and separate license for each units depending upon the turnover from the concerned State/ Central Licensing Authority.
FSSAI license for food under Railways premises are issued by the Railways Designated Officers.
FSSAI license for food under Airport/Seaport premises are issued by APHO/PHO.
All Food Service Operators including medical stores have to acquire FSSAI License.
According to Regulation 2.1.7 (1) of FSS Regulations 2011, a license shall be valid for a period of 1 to 5 years as chosen by the Food Business Operator. The validity will start from the date of issue of license.
